Wheel-thrown and Altered Teapots

The teapot on the left is constructed from a sphere that I

threw on the wheel. Then, I cut the sphere into three

pieces, added slabs, and made the handle, spout, and lid.

Though a bit unpractical, the teapot is, indeed, functional. The teapot on the right is built from two hollow donuts which I threw on the wheel. Water can flow from the lid through any part of the teapot and then out of the spout. Both of these teapots are ventures into the design of teapots while maintaining the function which I find so meaningful in ceramic wares.

Tall Patterned Vase

This vase was a major mileston for me, simply because it is the tallest vessel I have ever thrown. The pot also has a very unique shape which I really enjoy. I was inspired to focus on the detail of the dots which cover this pot.

Faces

Sculpting faces has always inspired me. My fascination with faces was formed while I continuously saw the motif appear in my mentor, Lily's, stunning sculptures. Clay can be transformed to show emotions, and it truly comes to life in faces. As I have been practicing to make more realistic faces, these two faces have unique patterns carved over them, showing a deeper meaning within the piece.

Funky Slab Teapots

As I dive further into experimenting with form versus function, I have found slab teapots to be extremely fun to work with. These are two of my favorite teapots which play with movement and slab techniques.

Phantasie

This piece is part of a new series I am working on based on the theme of sound. Inspired by a piano piece, the work begins slowly and incorporates the motifs that are in the musical piece as it builds into an organic form.

Nerdy Chicken

This is part of a dream-like set of animals which interact through dancing. The animals all have human accessories, making them feel like children's book characters.

I am a big fan of chickens, and, though they are not the brightest creatures, I think the suit and tie and glasses fit their personalities quite well. After drawing a Nerdy Chicken six years ago, seeing this sketch come to life was rather exciting!

Jazz Piece

The form of this piece is inspired by ancient greek ceramics. The banding of the black slip, handles, and narratives are frequently seen in ancient work. I was inspired by music and encorporated the pattern of piano keys and sound waves into the upper part of the design. The narrative on this piece includes various instruments and jazz musicians onstage.
